How Often Should I Get My Fence Sealed?
There are generally two steps to protecting your fence and these are staining and sealing. the staining is what give the fence it's colour and keeps it looking good, this should be done on average every 5 years or so.
The second and most important part is the sealing of the fence, this is the bit that actually protects your fence and prolongs the life of it.
Think of the sealer like a sun cream for your fence, it protects the fence from the sun's harsh rays and prevents it from drying out. It also keeps the moisture out which in the UK is probably even more important as this stops the wood from soaking in water and causing rot.
Depending on the brand and type of sealant you are using you should be sealing the fence every 2 or so years to make sure it remains fully protected.
How Do I Clean My Fence?
Before you seal or stain your fence there may need to be an extra step involved in the preparation phase. Depending on how dirty your fence is, it may be in need of a good scrub before you can pint or oil it otherwise you will simply be sealing in the dirt.
In some cases you may also have vine like plants climbing up the fence that will also need to be removed before coating the fence.
There are two ways you can clean the fence, the old fashion way with a bucket of soapy water and a scrubbing brush, you can buy specially formulated fence and deck cleaner that will help remove the grime with the aid of a long firm brush.
If you have a pressure washer then it may make your life a little easier, be sure to stand a couple feet away from the fence so the pressure is not too strong and then slowly work your way along the fence, be sure to pay attention to the area where the fence meets the ground as that is the bit that gets the most dirt from splashback from the rain on the ground.
If you have used a soap solution then be sure that you was it off with clean water too as you don't want to be sealing of the soap, think of it as the same as washing and waxing your car, you would need to rinse and dry the car before waxing same as you need the fence to dry before sealing.
